WATCS Chapter 2: Going Home
The voice was low and tinged with anger.
Gu Yi couldn’t speak, choked by the man’s grip.
In this man's hands, he was like a kitten being casually lifted. In moments, his face turned red from lack of oxygen.
It hurt.
Gu Yi opened his eyes slightly and looked at the man in front of him.
The man had a tall, lean figure, clad in a black trench coat that blended into the night. He was… very good-looking. Forgive Gu Yi for using such vague and meager words to describe him—he had never been good with language, and being introverted didn’t help. At that moment, all he could think was: this man was the most handsome person he’d ever seen.
His features were sharply defined, with a clean-cut hairstyle. He looked about twenty-seven or twenty-eight, but the fury in his eyes gave Gu Yi the illusion that this man had known him forever, and had lived through endless years.
“Let…”
Gu Yi struggled in pain, but the sounds that came out were broken and breathless, not forming any words.
Veins bulged on his forehead as his pupils began to dilate.
No… he couldn’t win against this man’s strength… resisting was pointless…
Just as his consciousness began to fade, he heard the man say coldly, “You want to die? I’ll grant your wish.”
The grip on his neck tightened.
Gu Yi thought it was all over.
Then suddenly, the man let go.
Gu Yi collapsed to the ground, gasping for air, desperately trying to fill his lungs.
Air flooded into his chest as consciousness returned. His breathing was frantic, almost greedy.
His entire face was flushed, and each breath came on instinct alone.
The man looked at him and laughed. “I thought you weren’t afraid of dying.”
“Who… are you?”
Gu Yi looked up at him while still panting. “Are you… a soul reaper from the underworld?”
The man let out a low laugh and lazily walked toward him. With one foot, he stepped on Gu Yi’s chest, pinning him back to the ground.
“I’m not a soul reaper. I’m your damn second uncle. If you want to die, you need my permission first.”
“You…”
“Do you have any idea how you got your life? Your mother used her last breath to bring you into this world. And this is how you repay her, you little brat?”
The pressure on his chest increased, and Gu Yi winced in pain. The man crouched down, then placed a hand gently over Gu Yi’s left eye.
A burning pain erupted.
It felt like fire was searing through his eye. Gu Yi screamed, raising his hands in the air, trying to touch his eye—but afraid to.
Warm, sticky fluid streamed down from his left eye. It felt like… blood.
Through a haze of red, Gu Yi fell into a strange dream.
A rainy intersection. Flashing traffic lights. A car accident. A pregnant woman lying in a pool of blood. Her face soaked with tears, she clutched her belly and cried out in despair, over and over: “My baby… my baby…”
She was obsessed with giving birth to her child. Around her neck hung a jade pendant—exactly like the one Gu Yi wore.
He woke with a jolt.
The man had lifted his foot from Gu Yi’s chest and now stood at the edge of the rooftop, lighting a cigarette.
Smoke curled around him, making his side profile look even more unreal.
“That pregnant woman… was my mother?”
Gu Yi stumbled to his feet, disoriented and overwhelmed.
His body wobbled; too much had happened, too fast.
“Still want to die now?”
The man glanced at him.
“Who are you really? Human or ghost?”
The man didn’t answer. Instead, he opened his phone and held the screen in front of Gu Yi.
Gu Yi stepped closer and looked at the image.
His eyes widened. “This is…”
The photo was blurred, but still recognizable. It showed a man and a woman. The man’s face wasn’t visible, only his back. But the woman—was Bai Nuo.
She looked terrified, being dragged toward a wooded area behind the school by the man. In broad daylight.
Gu Yi’s blood turned to ice.
Even though the man’s face wasn’t shown, the clothes—identical to Gu Yi’s. The build—just like his.
“Where did this come from? That’s not me in the photo!” Gu Yi’s voice trembled.
The man said, “It’s from your school’s online forum. You didn’t know?”
Gu Yi shook his head. “No. I don’t have a phone.”
“…”
The man rubbed his temples. “Anyway, someone posted it online. If that’s not you, then someone is impersonating you. And it’s probably the same bastard who got your girl killed. What now? Gonna let that guy live comfortably while you go die? Let her die in vain? You okay with that?”
“She wasn’t my girlfriend.”
Gu Yi lowered his gaze, paused, then added softly, “I never dared to think that.”
The man frowned. “Are you even a man?”
“No.”
Gu Yi answered flatly. “I’m not a man. I’m just a freak. I couldn’t do anything for Bai Nuo. Even if I find who killed her, I’m powerless.”
The man chuckled. “Funny. You didn’t seem powerless when you jumped. That took guts.”
He took a drag from his cigarette, then waved Gu Yi over. “Come here.”
“…What for?”
“I said come here. You weren’t afraid to die, but you’re scared of me?”
Gu Yi thought about it. He really wasn’t sure if the man was human or ghost, but curiosity won.
He walked over.
The man smiled in satisfaction and ruffled Gu Yi’s hair like petting a dog. “My name’s Bo Si. From now on, you’ll follow me. I won’t let you starve.”
