AD Chapter 19
"... Who’s your boss? Bring them here. I won’t talk to you; I’ll speak directly to your boss."
Not talking to her? After yelling like that for so long?
Su Ning silently complained in his mind.
After that, the young assistant finally couldn’t hold back her tears and spoke, "Chu-ge, I... I’m really sorry... I didn’t know—"
"Apologies, Mr. Chu, I’m late," Su Ning suddenly walked up, intentionally raising his voice to drown out the rest of the young assistant’s sentence. The girl was still young and shy, and after being scolded so harshly in front of everyone, she didn’t need to continue being watched by the crowd.
"I’ve brought some drinks for everyone. Could you please help pass them out?" Su Ning smiled gently at the girl.
The young assistant was caught off guard. She didn’t know who Su Ning was, but there was no doubt that his appearance had rescued her. However, she didn’t dare leave immediately and nervously glanced at Chu Zichen.
But Chu Zichen’s focus had completely shifted to Su Ning, ignoring the assistant.
"Well, our big assistant Su finally arrived," Chu Zichen said with a sarcastic smile, his tone turning cold. "I would have thought you were some big shot, coming in like you’re the one calling the shots, not just here to be my assistant."
"Is there anyone more arrogant than you?" Su Ning thought to himself but kept a respectful face. "Sorry, Mr. Chu, I had a small matter to deal with, which delayed me a night." He smiled brightly, showing his teeth. "I didn’t cause any trouble, right?"
The crew hadn’t officially started shooting yet, and the female lead had not arrived. Chu Zichen, as the male lead of the drama, should have had equal prominence to the female lead, but she had been delayed, making him restless. So, even though the shooting hadn’t started, he had been venting his frustration on a young assistant from the crew.
Chu Zichen wasn’t just angry that Su Ning arrived late, but was also mocking him for using his connection with Gu Lingfeng to rise through the ranks. He thought Su Ning was deliberately going against him, thinking he could just disregard Chu Zichen due to Gu Lingfeng’s influence.
Su Ning, however, pretended not to understand the underlying sarcasm. He let Chu Zichen rant, knowing that once the man had vented, he would stop. After dealing with so many lovers of Gu Lingfeng, Su Ning had developed the ability to let criticism roll off him without care, looking like he was respectfully listening, while his mind wandered off, thinking about the food he had passed on earlier.
To the other crew members, this looked like the classic scene of a big-name star venting his anger on a new assistant. They didn’t know who Su Ning was, but they sympathized with him, especially the young assistant who had been crying earlier.
Chu Zichen finally stopped scolding Su Ning, not because he was tired of it, but because the director had arrived.
Everyone had already done their makeup, and the director was about to shoot a preliminary scene. The female lead hadn’t arrived yet, so they were just getting familiar with the set, filming less important scenes for now.
Chu Zichen kept his dark expression, still irritable. Everyone could feel his bad mood, and they also noticed that Su Ning had become the perfect target for his frustrations. Chu Zichen’s regular assistant, who often took the brunt of his temper, was somewhat grateful for Su Ning, as the new assistant was now taking some of the heat.
During the lunch break, the crew had box lunches. Everyone was quietly eating when something else came up with Chu Zichen's lunch. He found ginger in his meal, which he didn’t eat. He was convinced the crew was deliberately targeting him, as if they were trying to undermine him while treating the female lead like a queen.
Su Ning felt helpless at dealing with such a "boss." He didn’t know how Chu Zichen had ended up this way, but he suspected it was all because of his status as the golden boy of the industry.
Finally, Su Ning took the car to the hotel to get Chu Zichen a special meal, which the latter criticized but at least ate.
Just after lunch, the director came in, accompanied by someone, and everyone gathered around happily. Su Ning, who was peeling fruit for Chu Zichen, glanced over to see who had arrived. However, the crowd was too thick, and he couldn’t see who it was.
This much attention likely meant that the long-awaited female lead had finally arrived.
Su Ning wasn’t too concerned, but as he turned around, he suddenly noticed the atmosphere around him had grown tense and cold. He looked at Chu Zichen and saw his face completely darken.
"Just an old woman who climbed up by selling her body, is she really worth all this flattery?" Chu Zichen sneered, full of disdain.
Su Ning was taken aback, not sure whether he was shocked by Chu Zichen’s words or by his boldness in saying such things so openly.
Was he really going to say something like that in public?
Fortunately, the crowd had already gathered over there, and no one else was around them. So, only Su Ning and Chu Zichen were left hearing this.
As the crowd got closer, Su Ning finally saw who the female lead was, and he froze.
It was Fan Xin—his former employer.
