AD Chapter 24
When Shen Yueyue heard Su Ning say that Chu Zichen wasn’t actually his real boss, she had originally come over to stand up for him. But now her attention shifted entirely, eyes brimming with curiosity.
However, Su Ning didn’t elaborate further. He couldn’t exactly go around telling everyone about the relationship between Chu Zichen and Gu Lingfeng, even if Chu Zichen himself might not care.
If it weren’t for the fact that the girl was truly worried about him—usually looking soft and harmless, but now clenching her teeth like she wanted to scratch someone’s face when she heard how Chu Zichen was giving him a hard time—Su Ning wouldn’t even have shared this much.
He raised his hand and gently patted the girl's head, smiling kindly. “You just need to know that after this drama is done filming, I won’t be working as his assistant anymore.”
The indoor scenes had finished filming, and it was time to move to exterior shots. The filming location wasn’t far from the hotel the production team had booked—about an hour’s drive—but it was outside the city, practically the countryside. Conditions couldn’t compare to before. There wasn’t even a big supermarket nearby. To Chu Zichen, it was basically the “middle of nowhere.”
Upon learning they had to go to the “countryside” to film, Chu Zichen complained for a long time, threw a fit in his room, and went around sulking like the world owed him millions. To calm him down, his agent personally came over, and the two locked themselves in a room to talk for over an hour. When they emerged, Chu Zichen’s expression still wasn’t great, but he didn’t look quite as resistant.
As the agent left, he gave Su Ning a long look, as though he wanted to say something, but in the end, he just nodded and walked away.
After being pacified by his agent, Chu Zichen stopped throwing tantrums, but that didn’t mean his disdain for the filming location disappeared. On the contrary, his pickiness about the environment only made him more demanding—which meant Su Ning had it even harder.
When they arrived at the shooting site, Chu Zichen went straight to makeup while Su Ning began unloading box after box. Judging by the strain on his face, those boxes weren’t light. A crew member nearby saw him and asked curiously what he was moving. Su Ning smiled wryly and gave a brief reply:
“Food, clothes, daily supplies, I guess.”
The person was stunned. Seeing all those boxes, it was like they were moving house. Sure, the area was far from the city and shopping wasn’t convenient, but wasn’t this a little too over the top?
What Su Ning didn’t say was that Chu Zichen had deliberately brought all this stuff—whether it would be used or not—just to make his time filming more “comfortable.” But more importantly, it was a way to torment Su Ning.
Watching Su Ning run back and forth under the blazing sun, shirt clinging to his sweaty back and clearly showing his skin underneath, Chu Zichen felt immensely satisfied. This “shabby place” suddenly didn’t seem so bad after all.
And it didn’t end there. Just as Su Ning finally finished unloading everything and sat down for a sip of water, Chu Zichen—now fully made up and waiting to film—called him over to fan him.
Su Ning, just as he unscrewed the bottle cap: “……”
Because it was an outdoor shoot, they had erected a temporary tent where they stored equipment and where actors did their makeup. The only good thing was that it offered shade, but the heat still poured in relentlessly. Some actors who sweat easily had to keep blotting their foreheads with tissues even during makeup to avoid ruining their look.
All the other actors—even the female lead, Fan Xin, who had the biggest name in the cast—held small electric fans to cool off. But Chu Zichen simply took it for granted that Su Ning would fan him manually. When Su Ning hesitated even slightly, he immediately glared at him and snapped:
“What are you dawdling for? Trying to roast me alive? Do you have no sense at all?”
Su Ning touched his pocket and thought about the balance on his debit card. The simmering anger in his chest slowly faded. He walked over calmly, picked up a fan, and started fanning Chu Zichen.
“He really thinks he’s an emperor, huh? With that skinny little frame, even if you dressed him in royal robes, he wouldn’t look the part.”
Seeing Chu Zichen boss Su Ning around again, Shen Yueyue couldn’t hold back her scorn. Next to her, Fan Xin’s brows also creased slightly at the sight.
Shen Yueyue turned to Fan Xin for help. “Xin-jie, can’t you do something for Ning-ge? Chu Zichen treats him like he’s not even human. It was bad enough on set, but now out here in the heat, it’s dangerous—he could get heatstroke.”
Fan Xin thought for a moment, picked up her script, and walked over to Chu Zichen with a smile. “Zichen, we’ve got a scene together later. Want to run through the lines and get into character?”
Chu Zichen was slightly surprised, but didn’t overthink it. They’d done plenty of scenes together, and the director often asked them to rehearse or had Fan Xin help coach him a bit.
Even though Chu Zichen constantly belittled Fan Xin behind her back and never really respected her as a senior, he still didn’t dare act too obviously rude. He was afraid someone might record him and post it online—then he’d get flamed for being a diva who disrespected veterans.
Now that Fan Xin was the one approaching him, if he refused, it would only hurt his image in the director’s eyes—and if fans found out, they’d say he wasn’t professional.
There aren’t many truly dumb people in showbiz. Chu Zichen acted spoiled and arrogant only because he knew when and where he could get away with it.
After a brief moment of calculation, Chu Zichen stood up from his chair and gave Fan Xin a smile. “If Xin-jie is willing to guide me, I’d be more than happy.”
While chatting with Chu Zichen, Fan Xin made a playful wink at Su Ning from a hidden angle he couldn’t see.
Su Ning couldn’t help but laugh, and felt deeply touched.
This wasn’t the first time Fan Xin had stepped in to help. She knew he was still technically working under Chu Zichen and couldn’t come to his defense too openly. But every time, she found a subtle and graceful way to ease his burden without raising suspicion.
Su Ning silently calculated the time left—only a small portion of the drama had been filmed so far, and there were still multiple shooting locations ahead. At this rate, he’d have to stay by Chu Zichen’s side for at least another two or three months.
At that moment, Su Ning realized just how much he missed Gu Lingfeng. He’d never felt more strongly that Gu Lingfeng wasn’t just a generous boss—but a truly good boss.
