AD Chapter 22
Hearing Fan Xin speak up for him, Su Ning felt a little touched. But when it came to this matter, outsiders really couldn’t interfere. So, he smiled and said in a joking tone, “Well, that’s the hard truth of being someone’s assistant. Haven’t you seen the extras outside? They’re squatting under the hot sun with no shade, and if they’re even a little late, someone else will snatch the job.”
Fan Xin laughed, then spat out, “Nonsense, when you were my assistant, I didn’t make things that difficult for you, did I?”
Su Ning played along, “That’s because Sister Xin is kind-hearted and beautiful.”
Fan Xin shook her head with a smile, then became serious. “Although he’s currently Gu Lingfeng’s lover, who knows how long that’ll last? Your current boss isn’t exactly the loyal type. So, don’t be too accommodating toward him. You have to stand your ground when it’s necessary.” She paused and looked at Su Ning with a meaningful glance. “You’ve been with Gu Lingfeng for four years. None of them have been with him that long.”
Su Ning couldn’t help but smile wryly. “Sister Xin, I’m just an assistant. I’m not the same as them.”
Fan Xin still smiled, but didn’t argue any further.
After Fan Xin left, Su Ning’s smile faded.
When it came to being with Gu Lingfeng the longest, he probably was the one who had been with him the most. But he wasn’t Gu Lingfeng’s lover—he was just the last bit of face he had left to cover up the truth. In reality, he wasn’t even treated as a lover. When they slept together, it was like nothing had happened, and there were no gifts or efforts to pamper him.
Over the more than four years, Gu Lingfeng had probably slept with him more times than any of his actual lovers. In some ways, he was more important than those lovers. If they knew that, they’d probably be envious, right?
Su Ning couldn’t help but chuckle bitterly, then turned to wash his face in the bathroom.
The next day, Chu Zichen had a variety show to record in a nearby city. So, after finishing his morning shoot, he took the afternoon off. In fact, he wanted to take the whole day off, but his agent insisted he finish his morning scenes before heading to the show.
Su Ning hadn’t met Chu Zichen’s agent yet, but he had heard that this person was quite capable. When Chu Zichen signed with him, it had caused a stir because no one could understand how a new artist could land such a prominent agent. But once it became clear who was backing Chu Zichen, the speculation died down.
From what Su Ning had observed over time, Chu Zichen was very temperamental, but he was somewhat afraid of his agent. If the agent ordered him to do something, he would throw a tantrum but would eventually do it.
In just a short time, Chu Zichen had achieved such success, thanks to the backing of Gu Lingfeng as well as his capable agent.
Su Ning couldn’t help but think, some people really are just lucky. A single opportunity can bring results that others can never achieve, yet they don’t even appreciate it.
It made him envious just thinking about it.
But Su Ning quickly shook off the thought and drove Chu Zichen to the show. Since he had shot all of his scenes in the morning, he hadn’t gotten much rest and had been criticized by the director. Now, his mood was bad.
Su Ning had to juggle being both Chu Zichen’s driver and assistant. Since Su Ning had come, Chu Zichen’s previous assistant had practically stopped working. Not only did she do nothing, but she also constantly nitpicked at Su Ning. Su Ning knew it was because she had been told to do so by Chu Zichen.
For example, after driving Chu Zichen to the recording location, Su Ning was planning to find somewhere to rest. After all, he had driven for a long time, and the recording would take hours, and afterward, he would have to drive again for a long time.
However, before Su Ning could find a place to rest, Chu Zichen impatiently glanced at him. “You wait in the car. Don’t be in the way here.”
The staff at the variety show, not knowing the situation, thought Chu Zichen was worried about his people disturbing their work, so they smiled and said, “It’s fine, this gentleman can wait in the lounge. There are drinks and snacks, and if you’re hungry, you can grab something to eat. It will take at least two or three hours to finish recording.”
Chu Zichen frowned. Before he could speak, his assistant, Du Xiaoling, intervened, “What our Zichen means is that we don’t need random people occupying resources. Zichen only needs me with him, and as for someone driving the car, it’s best if he stays in the car.” She then raised her chin, giving Su Ning a disdainful look, her expression almost identical to Chu Zichen’s.
The staff felt awkward about the situation but couldn’t say anything more. They seemed to understand the dynamics and decided to say no more. But they couldn’t help but eye Su Ning in curiosity, wondering if he had offended Chu Zichen, as they discreetly sized him up.
Chu Zichen told him to wait in the car, and Su Ning didn’t argue. He figured it didn’t matter where he rested; the car would be quiet and comfortable.
As he turned to leave, Chu Zichen suddenly called out to him, a hint of impatience in his voice. “Stay in the car and don’t run around. Don’t let me not be able to find you when I need you.” Then he paused and, perhaps intentionally, added, “That car was lent to me by Lingfeng. Be careful not to scratch it. If you do, I won’t be able to pay for it.”
Su Ning: “…”
Chu Zichen often referred to Gu Lingfeng casually, always calling him “Lingfeng” to show their closeness. Now, he used his full name, probably to let the staff know.
Sure enough, Su Ning glanced at the staff member, and now they were even more enthusiastic, their gaze toward Chu Zichen warmer than before. “Ah, Zichen, don’t stand here, let’s go inside and sit.”
Chu Zichen followed the staff inside, throwing Su Ning a look that could either be a sign of dominance or showing off.
Su Ning shook his head and didn’t pay much attention to it.
Once back in the car, with the windows rolled up, the surroundings became quiet. Su Ning looked at the car, then sighed with a bitter smile.
He was very familiar with Gu Lingfeng’s garage and had driven almost every car there, including this one, though not often.
But he hadn’t known that Gu Lingfeng had lent this car to Chu Zichen. Knowing Gu Lingfeng’s personality, it was clear that he didn’t offer the car willingly—more likely, Chu Zichen had pestered him with charm, and Gu Lingfeng couldn’t refuse due to his “lover” tendencies.
